Durango was founded by the the Denver & Rio Grande Railway in 1879 and the railroad arrived in Durango on August 5, 1881. Construction was finished on the tracks to Silverton by July 1882 and the line began carrying passengers and freight. The line was created to carry mined resources but passengers soon realized the value of the scenic views.
The Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad (D&SNGR) line has run continuously since 1882. The narrow gauge rail road is 3 ft. wide and runs 45.2 miles from Silverton to Durango within Colorado. It is now a popular tourist destination. For more information, visit the website here.
